We get asked lots of questions about using DCC with Kato model trains. DCC isn't popular in Japan where Kato trains are designed and manufactured, so sometimes they do things differently to other producers!
Here's some answers to some of the most common questions.
DCC (Digital Command Control) is a system that allows independent control of multiple trains on the same track. Each locomotive has a unique digital address, and commands are sent via the track to control speed, direction, and lighting.
Many DCC locomotives include "dual-mode" decoders that can detect and operate on both DC and DCC systems. Sometimes this can be switched off with CV29. However, some features may be limited in DC mode.
Many Kato trains can be used with most standard DCC systems. However, some Kato locomotives require specific decoders due to their design. Some older models are particularly tricky to fit decoders. See the sections below for details on decoder compatibility.
No, but in some countries, a simple Digitrax controller is sold badged as a Kato item with adapters to easily connect to Kato Unitrack. This isn't available in the UK.
Most Kato Japan locomotives come as DC models. However, many are "DCC-friendly" meaning they have space for a relatively easy decoder installation.
KatoUSA offers some locomotives pre-fitted with DCC, making it easier for users who do not want to install decoders themselves. When purchasing a KatoUSA locomotive, it is essential to check the specifications to ensure you are getting the version that matches your layout and control system. These models are available in three main versions:
Kato locomotives designed for DCC have different installation options:
Please note that TrainTrax.co.uk does not currently stock third-party DCC decoders. You may need to source these from other specialist retailers.
Kato Japan have commissioned specialized decoders for their N scale trains:
These decoders are designed for Kato’s Japanese and European models and are not directly compatible with KatoUSA models. We understand they were designed by Digitrax under license so have many similarities with other Digitrax decoders.
Kato’s EM13 and FL12 decoders do not support RailCom. However, third-party decoders from ESU, Zimo, and Lenz may support advanced feedback and bidirectional communication features.
Many Kato USA locomotives are designed for easy DCC conversion.
For N scale locomotives, common decoder choices include:
Please note that TrainTrax.co.uk does not currently stock third-party DCC decoders. You may need to source these from other specialist retailers.
We'd recommend buying items with sound factory fitted, as DIY sound installations in N scale can be challenging due to space limitations. Some options include:
Yes, but these decoders do not always support read-back functions. Some systems may require programming in "Direct Mode" instead of "Paged Mode." Programme FL12 at the same time as EM13.
We're not DCC experts, but we will try to provide support on products we have supplied. We cannot provide help for items bought elsewhere, including DCC Controllers.
