The EF510 is an AC/DC electric locomotive that debuted in 2002. Nicknamed "RED THUNDER," it was introduced to replace the EF81s used on the Japan Sea Trunk Line. Starting in 2010, JR East's 500 series locomotives were deployed to Tabata Depot for the sleeper express "Hokutosei" and "Cassiopea" services. A total of 15 new locomotives were deployed: 13 Hokutosei-colored (blue) cars and two new Cassiopeia-colored (silver) cars, No. 509 and No. 510. These locomotives were used to pull the sleeper express "Hokutosei" and "Cassiopea." With the end of regular service for the "Hokutosei" in 2015 and the "Cassiopea" the following year, all locomotives were transferred to JR Freight's Toyama Locomotive Depot. In addition to the Japan Sea Trunk Line, they are also used to pull freight trains as far west as Okayama and in the Chukyo region.
