Description
The "Hakkoda" express train is a passenger express train that runs on the Tohoku Main Line between Ueno and Aomori. It debuted in 1961 and, from the 1960s to the 1970s, was the vanguard of overnight trains in the Tohoku region, departing Ueno Station at 7 PM, connecting with the Seikan Ferry from Aomori to Hokkaido. After departing Ueno, it would reach Wakkanai, Abashiri, and Obihiro the next day, making it a favorite among young travelers nicknamed the "Crab Tribe" for their large backpack-carrying style. Sleeping cars were added on the late-night Sendai-Aomori route, making it a popular express train with frequent stops in the Tohoku region.
