The 883 series was introduced in 1995 to accelerate service and improve service on the Nippo Main Line. It was JR Kyushu's first pendulum-type train and Japan's first commercial AC pendulum-type train. Initially, five 7-car and three 5-car trains were manufactured, each featuring a unique front panel design based on the year of manufacture. The 5-car trains featured silver, yellow, and dark blue front panels for distinctive design. Since 2005, the trains have undergone renovations, adopting the current metallic blue exterior. Furthermore, in 2008, the 5-car trains were converted to 7-car configurations, bringing the total number of trains to 7. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the series' debut in 2025, the first train (AO-1) will be decorated with a commemorative wrapping and will be in operation for a limited time until the end of the year. This 5-car set from KATO's 883 series, featuring a distinctive yellow front cover, is being re-produced for the first time in a long time.
