This is a lovely kit. Of itself it deserves a full five stars, though for anyone wishing to make a mini-modular layout of some length it will be a fair investment and not to be undertaken lightly so four stars to be cautious. However I don't imagine the kit was ever conceived to be used as such. As the web sites in Japan suggest, it is something for collaborative effort and would be an ideal starting point for a club 'challenge' or to introduce new modellers, particularly junior ones, to scenic modelling. The price is possibly on a par with a kit for a building of a similar size so in this respect it is value for money, especially given it includes a piece of track and some foam sheet for landscaping. This is of an easy to carve but non-crumbly kind.
The laser-cut MDF parts are accurate and perfectly formed. Part of the intention I'm sure is to introduce modellers to kit construction along the lines of many toys and models (dinosaurs, cars and so on) of similar construction. It slots together nicely and is self-supporting as the glue dries. (Glue is not supplied, but PVA or similar works well). The instructions are in Japanese and are quite small, but clear and easy to follow. Dry run assembly before gluing is generally a good idea.
I first came across the mini-dioramas on the Peco/Kato stand at the 009 Society 50th Anniversary Exhibition at Statfold Barn earlier this autumn. They made an excellent display. If I was to suggest one thing that would be nice it would be some self-adhesive felt or rubber feet to attach to the laser cut ones as I can imagine these mini dioramas being displayed on sideboards or set up on dining room tables.
