Description
The KiHa 52 was a more powerful development of the KiHa 20 series, fitted with two engines and introduced in 1958. It had a similar basic structure to the KiHa 20 but was extended to 21.3 m, with an extra two-tier side window between the passenger doors.
The class was used on local and regional lines across Japan, especially on routes with steep gradients. Some vehicles continued in use after the transition to JR, before gradually being replaced by newer stock.
This powered general-colour version represents a Niigata Iron Works-built vehicle from the JNR era, as allocated to Yonago Locomotive Depot before 1978.
