The iconic Amtrak passenger cars that defined the 1980s are now available with new car numbers!

During its beginnings, Amtrak inherited an assortment of outdated passenger cars from other railroads - many of which were steam-heated and in need of replacement. To modernize its fleet, Amtrak placed an order with the Budd Company for new single-level cars. The first order resulted in 492 Amfleet I cars, built between 1975 and 1977, which were primarily used on short-distance intercity routes.

Amfleet II was introduced beginning in 1981, approximately around the middle of the EMD F40PH locomotives' service life with Amtrak. Featuring larger windows and more comfortable interior arrangements, the Amfleet II cars were designed with longer-distance service in mind, while still offering the versatility of a single-level coach compared with the taller, double- deck Superliner equipment.
