Description
The KiHa 52 was a powerful general-purpose diesel railcar based on the KiHa 20 series and fitted with two engines. Introduced in 1958, it was 21.3 m long and had one additional two-tier side window between the passenger doors compared with the KiHa 20.
The class was widely used on local lines around Japan, particularly on routes with steep gradients. This powered version represents a Niigata-built vehicle in metropolitan/capital-region orange livery, as seen at Tsuruga Locomotive Depot around 1985.
