"TWILIGHT EXPRESS" is a sleeping train for West Japan, which began to operate on June 17, 2017. While inheriting the tradition of "Twilight Express", the concept of "a hotel runs in beautiful Japan" was developed with the aim of delivering the attraction of the area along the route and becoming a representative train of Japan.
KATO has the appearance of "Nostalgic Modern" with a golden band on "Shu-like green" following the flow of "Twilight Express", an observation deck consisting of five streamlines, and a cab like a bonnet Headlights of round shape create a nostalgic look and highlight different attractions from other cruise trains.
Main features
- On the body of the shape that draws a dignified, yet flowing line, the observation deck which is one of the biggest features, of course, the arrangement of windows with a large side window with a sense of openness, the exhaust pipe of the connection surface unique to a mobile vehicle Accurately reproduce.
- The room with the view seen from the window such as the observation room and the lounge, the dining room car and the guest room of the suite is properly reproduced. The characteristic pattern drawn on the wall of the dining room car kitchen is also reproduced by printing. We commercialize the state of the daytime where the door is opened and the left and right can be overlooked in the guest room.
- Reproduce the different carpet colors (car No. 1 → blue / car No. 10 → green) of the two leading car observation rooms.
- Exhaust pipes installed on the end face of No. 1, 5, 6 and 10 cars are set as separate parts.
- We reproduce refined paint which put on color, luster of "carp green" of car and gold belt. Various logos, lettering and sabots are realistically expressed in print.
- Head / tail lights on. The marker light at the top of the observation deck also lights up only when backing up.
- The motor with a flywheel enables stable driving. Compatible with DCC decoder installation.
- Both head parts are dummy couplers (connector cover attachment state), and the middle connection part is an image of the electric train of a real vehicle, adopting a body mount tight coupler (with hook).
- The package is a 6-car bookcase x 2 configuration, and a specially designed (gloss green) bookcase sleeve is included.

This is a train I have been interested in ever since I saw a Tomy PlaRail model of it some years ago. Obviously the Tomy is just a toy, but the design of the gold grill and other features always looked good even on that model.
So when I saw this 10 car set I just had to have it. Sure it is not cheap, but this is a 10 car set and comes packaged in a pair of the normal Kato style bookshelf cases in a lovely slip case. Even this slip case is better than the normal ones being made of a thicker than average card in a glossy green finish with the name of the train in gold on the front. Just the packaging gives you a clue that this is a step up on even the normal superb Kato standards.
However when you see the train cars themselves you truly appreciate why they have gone the extra mile with this set. Each car is distinctly different from the others, no head and tail car with 8 identical cars between them, each is stunningly detailed. The base colour of each car is a beautiful dark gloss green with a detailing stripe in gold as well as some other features picked out in gold. There is of course other detailing text such as the train logo. All the expected under car detail is present along with text printed where appropriate, all of it as crisp as you could possibly imagine.
The standard lighting is over and above any I have seen on any other model regardless of scale, with very distinctive running lights on the head and tail cars. Personally I have also purchased the interior lighting kits to add to this train as I think it deserves to be fitted with those to finish off the effects. I think in all honesty this is probably the most beautiful looking and detailed model I have yet owned. Kato you really have outdone yourselves this time and raised the bar even higher than normal. I wonder what you have up your sleeves to surpass this set!
