Product notes translated from KATO:
The ED16 was introduced in 1931, before JNR, when imported electric locomotives were mainstream. Eighteen were built as domestic medium-sized standard electric locomotives. They first worked on mountain electrified routes such as the Sasago Tunnel on the Chuo Line and the Shimizu Tunnel on the Joetsu Line. After the war they were allocated to the Ome, Itsukaichi and Nambu lines, as well as the Hanwa Line, before all 18 locomotives gathered at Tachikawa Depot around 1965 and worked dedicated limestone trains between Okutama and the Keihin industrial area. Because the Ome Line had a low route classification at the time, this relatively light axle-load locomotive remained in use for many years until its farewell run in 1983.
This product is a reproduction. From this production, a slotless motor is adopted, and the leading wheels are changed to spoked wheels. The item number, price and JAN code have changed accordingly.
Main Features:
- Represents the late-life appearance of a Tachikawa Depot locomotive in the Showa 40s period.
- Realistically reproduces old electric locomotive details such as body bands, rivets and deck areas, giving a compact but weighty appearance.
- Front windows use black H-rubber. The lightning arrester is positioned behind the pantograph, and snowploughs are not fitted.
- Slotless motor gives smooth and quiet running. Although a medium-sized locomotive, it can haul a full Hoki 2500/9500 formation of 16 wagons plus brake van.
- Selectable number plates: 3, 10, 16 and 18. Selectable manufacturer plates: Kawasaki, Mitsubishi and Hitachi.
- Headlight illuminates.
- Arnold couplers fitted as standard, with replacement knuckle couplers included.
