Details
Viewliner I cars are single-level sleeping cars used by Amtrak on long-distance routes in the eastern United States. They were introduced to replace older “Heritage Fleet” sleeping cars and to provide modern accommodation on routes where taller bi-level equipment could not operate due to tunnel clearances.
A total of 50 Viewliner I sleeping cars were built between 1995 and 1996 by Morrison-Knudsen (with Amerail completing production). The first car entered service in November 1995 on the Lake Shore Limited, marking the introduction of a new generation of single-level overnight accommodation for Amtrak’s eastern routes.
The Viewliner design features a stainless-steel carbody, a length of approximately 85 feet (26 m), and a maximum operating speed of around 110 mph (177 km/h). These cars operate on standard-gauge track and use head-end power supplied by the locomotive.
One of the most distinctive features of the Viewliner I sleepers is their two rows of windows, allowing both upper and lower berths to have an outside view—something not possible on many earlier sleeper designs. The modular interior design also allows individual accommodation units to be replaced or serviced more easily.
Today, Viewliner I sleepers continue to operate on several Amtrak long-distance trains east of Chicago, including services such as the Cardinal, Crescent, Lake Shore Limited, and Silver Meteor.
