Description
Steam Locomotive D51 Hokkaido with Giesel Ejector
The D51, a Hokkaido steam locomotive with an enclosed cab and truncated deflector, was used until the end of the steam locomotive era.The D51, a Japanese National Railways steam locomotive affectionately known as ``Degoichi,'' was introduced in Japan in 1935. -The largest number of 1115 cars were manufactured, and they were used all over the country. Many variations can be seen as they have been modified according to the region and line section, and in Hokkaido they were characterized by unique equipment that could be called extremely cold region specifications. Furthermore, the D51 was equipped with a device called a "Giesl ejector" to improve combustion efficiency. The D51 was characterized by a flat, inverted trapezoidal chimney, which had the effect of reducing coal consumption by approximately 10%. Since the steam engine industry had already reached the end of its life, only 36 cars were modified, and they were actively deployed in the Oiwake Engine Depot in Hokkaido.
