Description
The sleeper express 'Hamanasu' was a JR Hokkaido overnight train running between Aomori and Sapporo via the Seikan Tunnel. It appeared with the opening of the tunnel in 1988 and became a popular mixed-facility train, combining B-class sleeper cars, carpet cars, Dream Car reclining-seat vehicles and reserved and unreserved seating.
The regular basic formation was seven cars, formed from five 14 Series seating cars and two sleeper cars. In busy periods the train could be strengthened to as many as 12 cars. The real service ended in March 2016 with the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
