This item uses Train Trax's website pre-order function. For simplicity of processing, each product will need to be placed on a separate pre-order as they will probably arrive at different times. The EF66-0 was one of Japan's most powerful DC electric locomotive classes and became strongly associated with long-distance Blue Train sleeper services. This late-period Blue Train version represents the locomotive as seen in the first half of the 2000s.

The model is designed for serious long-consist operation. KATO notes that it has the haulage capacity to pull a 15-car passenger train with interior lighting fitted, including on routes with a 4 percent gradient. It is therefore a good match for full Blue Train formations as well as more compact sleeper-train layouts.
