Description
- The ED79 is a locomotive exclusively for the Seikan Tunnel section that opened in 1988. It is an AC electric locomotive for both passengers and freight, created by modifying the ED75 700 series of the Japanese National Railways. Its structure is suited to the unique environment inside the Seikan Tunnel, and it was used to pull passenger trains alone and freight trains in multiple units.
- It was used to pull the sleeper express trains "Hokutosei", "Twilight Express", "Cassiopeia", and the sleeper express "Hamanasu".
