In September 1976, according to the whole line AC electrification of the Tohoku Main Line, the section of the Ituba Line of Okuu Main Line and Fukushima-Yonezawa was switched from DC electrification to AC, and AC electrified at the same time between Yonezawa-Umae and Chitose, and further Sendai -As for the Senzan Line between Umae Chitose, all lines became AC electrification, and it is the ED 78 for the Akansen gradient line district that has appeared.
The ED78 has a specification according to the Senzan Line track standard so that it can be used commonly on the Senzan Line and Ouba Main Line, and it has become a large-sized vehicle body equipped with an intermediate carriage from the increase in grade line zone dedicated equipment although D-shaped. In response to the steep slopes of the Itabai Okuha line and Senzan line's tunnel, the power regenerative brake was equipped with the power regenerative brake by the first thyristor control in the AC electric locomotive together with the EF71.

Main features

- H rubber of the front window glass / side light window is set in gray. The cabin side window is reproduced in the original. Dumplings on the roof are white.
- The replacement license plate reproduces the cutout character number, and there are 4 types of 3, 4, 6 and 9 units. Manufacturer's plate is" Hitachi" printed.
- Wide and thick front step, inner tail type tail light, front air vent, induction member handrail / release separately made parts
- Reproduce the jumper plug around the skirt which is the feature of heavyweight specifications. A separate part jumper plug is included.
- With a familiar flywheel-mounted power unit, it provides stable driving and the same traction as a real machine.
- Coupler, Arnold coupler standard equipment. KATO knuckle coupler is included for replacement.
- The package has a standard clear case.
