Description
ED76 is an AC electric locomotive of Japanese National Railways that was born in 1965. Based on the famous AC locomotive ED75, the length of the car was extended to accommodate a steam generator (commonly known as SG) for passenger car heating, and it was made non-powered to accommodate the increased weight of the car due to the SG's water and fuel loading. Although it is a D-type car, it has a large body similar to an F-type machine, and by adjusting the air spring pressure of the intermediate bogie, it can enter lines with lower track standards. The 500 series first appeared in Hokkaido's first electrified section in 1968, between Otaru and Takikawa on the Hakodate Main Line, and has since been used in central Hokkaido with the extension of the electrified section. Even after the transition to JR, it was responsible for towing sleeper trains with 14-series passenger cars and local trains with 50-series and 51-series passenger cars, and is especially distinctive for its large head mark on sleeper expresses such as "Taisetsu" and "Rishiri."
