Description
This 6-car JNR-era freight set brings together a varied selection of wagons, making it an easy way to create a nostalgic mixed freight train.
During the JNR period, freight traffic often used a car-loading method, with individual wagons sent to different destinations. That produced trains with a wide mix of wagon types and appearances, which is exactly the atmosphere this set is designed to capture.
The set includes a covered wagon, open wagon, hopper wagon, refrigerated wagon, container wagon and brake van. It works well behind a wide range of locomotives, including steam locomotives such as D51, C11, C12 and C56, electric locomotives such as EF15, EF65, ED71, EF80 and EF81, and diesel locomotives such as DE10, DD51, DD54 and DF50.

The idea here is that this 'mixed goods train' gives you a selection of wagons that wouldn't look out of place behind almost any JNR freight locomotive, whether steam, diesel, or electric. Whether that's strictly true is debatable, as the wagons here are quite varied, including old fashioned box vans through to a relatively modern KOKI container flat. But as a starter pack there's a lot to like.
The wagons are all nicely made, smooth running, and look good together. The set comprises a black open wagon (with a removable tarpaulin), a brown bogie van, a white insulated van, a beige cement tank, a container flat with five containers (moulded together as a single piece), and a lovely little brake van complete with working lights. The brake van can be further enhanced with internal lighting using the standard Kato coach lighting kit.
For the price, it's hard to find fault here. As with most Kato wagons, the detail is mostly moulded rather than separately fitted. Liveries are simple but done nicely, and the container wagon and cement wagon are especially attractive models.
