The ED79 is a locomotive exclusively for the Seikan Tunnel, which opened in 1988. It is an AC electric locomotive for both passengers, which was created by remodeling the ED75 700 series of the Japanese National Railways. The structure is suitable for the unique environment inside the Seikan Tunnel, and passenger trains were towed by a single machine and freight trains by double heading.

It was active in towing the sleeper express "Hokutosei," "Twilight Express," "Cassiopeia," and the sleeper express "Hamanasu." You can enjoy the appearance of the end of ED79, in which the regular pantograph was replaced with a single arm pantograph from the original lower frame crossing type.

• The machine belonging to the Seikan Tunnel (formerly Goryokaku locomotive district) of JR Hokkaido's Hakodate Transport Station is a prototype
• The Seikan Tunnel dedicated machine ED79 0 series, which is characterized by a compact body that inherits the flow of the above, reproduces the rooftop equipment unique to AC locomotives with metal wire + green porcelain. Accented with a characteristic silver stable resistor cover
• The H rubber of the front window glass / side light window is reproduced in black, the crew room side window reproduces the aluminum sash window
• Stable running is possible by adopting a power unit with a fly wheel
• Can tow a sleeper limited express full train (with LED interior light) such as "Cassiopeia", "Hokutosei", "Twilight Express"
• The coupler is standard equipment of Arnold coupler. Replacement knuckle coupler included
• Selectable maker's plate: "Toshiba / Hitachi". Selectable number play: "4" "7" "13" "14"
